Top 7 Reasons To Read A Book Every Week!

July 31th, 2023

In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded by devices, apps, and advertisements vying for our attention. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat send notifications that demand our focus, causing our attention spans to shrink and our concentration to weaken. With the constant noise of digital distractions, it’s easy to overlook the power of reading.

Legendary investor Warren Buffett even reads up to six hours a day. He says : ‘’I read five daily newspapers, I read a fair number of magazines, I read 10-Ks, I read annual reports, and I read a lot of other things too. So, I’ve always enjoyed reading.’

While we continue to lean into our technology, especially with the coming impacts of artificial intelligence, it’s important to remember that books provide more for us than we realize.

So, let’s go over the seven reasons why reading a book a week can change your life in a tremendously positive way.

1. Reading books regularly has significant benefits for your brain.

It improves brain function in various ways, such as enhancing concentration, decision-making, memory retention, and critical thinking. According to a study published in neurology, being highly literate offers a considerable advantage. Additionally, reading regularly can help counteract memory decline and maintain brain function as you age. A major study found that people of all ages who engage in brain-challenging activities like reading perform better on fluid intelligence tests than those who don’t. Such activities build a reserve of neuronal connections, which slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, delaying the emergence of its symptoms.

2. Reading books is a great way to improve your vocabulary and communication skills.

Warren Buffet points out that one of the president’s strengths is reading, which makes him a good communicator and writer. When you read, your brain focuses and actively decodes the information, helping to expand your mind, vocabulary, and knowledge. Research shows that young students who read regularly develop larger vocabularies, which can have a positive impact on various aspects of life, such as standardized test scores, college admissions, and job opportunities. Being well-read and literate helps you better understand the world and yourself. It not only enhances your language skills but also boosts your confidence in communicating with others effectively. Unlike consuming other types of media like TikTok, reading actively engages your brain and helps you grow intellectually and linguistically.

3. Reading is an excellent way to relieve stress.

A study from the University of Sussex in 2009 found that reading for just six minutes can lead to a lower heart rate, reduced muscle tension, and decreased stress levels. Reading is more than just a distraction; it actively engages your imagination and transports you to a different state of mind. It’s even more effective at reducing stress compared to drinking tea, playing video games, or listening to music. Reading not only provides an escape from reality but also relaxes your body, similar to how meditation works. When we read, our brains shift focus away from stressors, taking us to a different place and helping us forget our daily worries. This makes reading a powerful tool to relieve stress and bring a sense of calm to our minds and bodies.

4. Reading books every day can expand your knowledge.

Books, both fiction and non-fiction, hold a wealth of information. Successful people like Warren Buffett credit their achievements to reading. By simply picking up a book, you can grow, discover, and make new connections. So, it’s encouraged to read a lot and absorb as much information as possible. Between winning championships and MVP awards, LeBron James finds relaxation in reading. By reading a wide variety of books or even deep diving into a specific topic that you find interesting, this helps you become more knowledgeable and helps you find things that really spark your interest.

5. Reading books can profoundly impact your life in unexpected ways.

As Warren Buffett puts it, what you read during your formative years plays a significant role in shaping who you become as an adult. A study conducted by Canadian psychologists in 2009 revealed a connection between reading habits and empathy levels. The research found that people who read fiction tended to display higher levels of empathy toward others. This is because fiction allows you to see the world through different characters’ eyes, experiencing their triumphs and challenges alongside them. The famous saying, “Don’t judge a person until you walk a mile in their shoes,” perfectly illustrates how books, especially fiction, foster empathy by exposing us to diverse perspectives and emotions. As our empathy grows, it positively impacts our personal and professional relationships, making them richer and more fulfilling.

6. Reading regularly is an excellent habit because it not only broadens your mind but also improves your sleep.

Warren Buffett suggests setting aside some time each day to read, especially before going to bed. Reading helps you relax, reducing stress and making it easier to fall asleep quickly. In contrast, using electronic devices with blue light, like phones, can disrupt our sleep by interfering with the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone, and our natural sleep-wake cycle. Reading books, on the other hand, promotes relaxation and prepares our brain for rest. According to a study published by the National Library of Medicine, 42 percent of participants who read before bedtime reported improved sleep. So, if you find it hard to sleep, try picking up a book and read until you feel tired—it may help you doze off more easily.

7. The last reason why reading books is beneficial is that it can greatly enhance your focus.

According to Warren Buffett, unlike other forms of entertainment like watching TV with background noise or listening to podcasts while running, reading demands your full attention. When you concentrate on what you’re reading, you give your brain a workout, making it stronger and improving your concentration and focus abilities.
